Learn Dutch Online: Top 5 Best Websites

Babbel

Babbel is a subscription-based language learning app that offers short, focused lessons in a variety of languages, including Dutch. It does this by helping you build practical conversation skills you can use in everyday life, right from the start. It does not waste time on impractical phrases, which is the best way to learn Dutch online.

Babble

The app uses real-life dialogues and introduces grammar-focused lessons early on, tailored to your skill level so you can learn at a comfortable pace. It also features speech recognition, allowing you to practice speaking into your microphone and get real-time guidance on your pronunciation.

In addition to its conversational approach, Babbel weaves helpful grammar tips into each lesson and wraps up with a personalized review session to help you reflect on your mistakes and track your progress over time.

Features

  • Languages Available: Babbel offers lessons in 14 languages, including Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Polish, English, Indonesian, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian.

  • Bite-Sized Lessons: Each lesson is designed to take just 10 to 15 minutes, making it easy to fit language learning into your daily routine.

  • Speech Recognition: Babbel uses AI-powered speech recognition to give you instant feedback on your pronunciation.

  • AI Conversation Partner: This tool lets you practice conversations in a simulated setting to help improve your speaking skills.

  • Spaced Repetition System: Babbel’s review manager uses spaced repetition techniques to help you better retain grammar and vocabulary over time.

  • Multi-Device Syncing: You can easily switch between your smartphone, tablet, and computer without losing your progress.

  • Offline Access: You can download lessons in advance, so you can keep learning even when you’re offline.

  • Flexible Plans: Babbel offers a variety of subscription options, including 3-month, 6-month, and lifetime plans to fit different learning goals and time commitments.

Price

Some of the plans that Babble offers are as follows:

  • 1 month: $13.95

  • 3 months: $$29.85

  • 6 months: $50.70

  • 12 months: $83.40

logo

There are more economical options out there, but these payment plans allow for the payment to be flexible.

Pros

  • It offers structured, grammar-rich lessons.

  • Has an easy-to-follow interface.

  • You can use it without an internet connection because it has an offline mode.

logo

Cons

  • It is not free.

  • There is limited content for advanced learners.

logo

During my review, I was surprised by how easy it was to follow along with the lessons, even though I had no prior experience with Dutch. Babbel not only helped me form simple sentences, but also gave me a better understanding of how those sentences are structured and the common patterns used in the language.

As a beginner, I never felt like the learning curve was too steep. However, users online who aren’t beginners felt that the app doesn’t offer enough advanced content for more experienced learners.

Duolingo

Duolingo is probably one of, if not the most, popular language learning sites out there. It is the first app people turn towards when they’re looking for a way to learn dutch online for free. Duolingo offers a gamified format of your average lessons. It keeps users motivated through streak building.

Duolingo

Think snapchat but for education. It has an extensive vocabulary, grammar and sentence library to help you dive into Dutch in a fun, interactive way. People are incentivised to learn further because Duolingo rewards you for your efforts.

There is even a leaderboard and I’ll be the first to admit, I wanted my name on there. You can easily get through the daily challenges in very little time.

Features:

  • Gamified Learning: Duolingo keeps you motivated with daily streaks, XP points, and leaderboards that encourage consistency and a bit of friendly competition. You’ll also earn badges and achievements as you hit milestones, and the app uses a skill tree format to help you progress step by step.

  • AI Powered Personalization: The app adapts to your performance, adjusting the difficulty of lessons to match your level. You can also practice speaking with an AI conversation partner, though this feature is only available for premium users.

  • Language Practice Tools: Duolingo includes speech recognition to help you improve your pronunciation. Each lesson combines listening, reading, writing, and speaking for well-rounded language practice.

  • Instant Feedback & Explain My Answer: You get real-time feedback and corrections as you learn. If you're unsure about a response, you can request a detailed explanation to better understand it.

  • Multifaceted Learning: The app offers short, interactive stories to build comprehension, audio lessons for real-world listening practice through podcasts, and even the option to learn with songs in certain courses.

  • Accessibility & Flexibility: Duolingo is available on iOS, Android, and through web browsers. Premium users can download lessons for offline use, and your progress stays synced across all your devices.

Price

Duolingo has a free version but that does come with ads. If you want an ad-free experience along with offline access and progress tracking, consider getting a subscription for Duolingo Super. It costs a mere $6.99/month. Definitely a great value for money.

Pros

  • Game-like learning

  • Excellent for beginners.

  • Has a massive active community to guide you through any problems you might have.

logo

Cons

  • Limited speaking practice.

  • Can get boring after a while due to repetitiveness.

logo

My take on this language learning platform is that it keeps its users consistent. I noticed that after a couple of days of using it, it became a daily habit. It became a part of my routine that I knew I had to do and make time for.

It was such a fun learning experience that I kept going back for more (that and the rewards, I really want my name on that leaderboard). However, I was advised by users online to supplement my lessons with more detailed grammar study on my own.

Memrise

Memrise is the one app on this list that does not come to play (except the times that it does). It is a platform probably made by serious language learners, for serious language learners. The main focus of Memrise is to make sure you retain the knowledge you’ve gained.

Memrise

It helps you memorize the vocabulary using spaced repetition and lets you follow along to native speakers. You get to learn the language from the best teachers. Those who know the ins and outs of their language, the phrases, the cultural context, everything. It is a very humanized way of learning in a time when everything is automated or AI.

It’s immersive, pleasant, and you get to personalize your learning plans on your pace and your level.

Features

  • Spaced Repetition: Helps you lock in new vocabulary by reviewing words at just the right intervals to boost long-term memory.

  • Native Speaker Videos: Features real people speaking the language so you can get used to natural pronunciation, slang, and everyday phrases.

  • AI-Powered Chatbot (Membot): Lets you practice conversations with a smart chatbot, helping you build confidence speaking in realistic situations.

  • Gamified Learning: Keeps you engaged with points, streaks, and leaderboards that make learning feel fun and rewarding.

  • Offline Access: You can download lessons and study anytime, even without an internet connection which is perfect for learning on the go.

  • Official Courses: Offers professionally created language courses in over 30 languages, with structured lessons and interactive content.

  • Cultural Insights: Adds valuable cultural context so you can understand how the language is actually used in everyday life.

  • Wide Language Coverage: Supports a wide range of languages. From major world languages to regional and even endangered or rare ones, making it accessible for all kinds of learners.

Price

Memrise offers a free basic plan along with a Pro plan that costs around $8.49 per month or $59.99 per year. The free version is surprisingly robust, which is why many users often recommend Memrise as one of the best free language learning apps. It also offers the following payment plans.

  • Monthly: $14.99

  • Annual: $89.99

  • Lifetime: $199.99

logo

It’s more flexible and affordable than most options on the market.

Pros

  • Authentic pronunciation.

  • Great for vocabulary building.

  • It has an offline mode so you don’t have to pause learning in the absence of WiFi.

logo

Cons

  • Less grammar explanations.

  • It is not ideal for deep language structured learning as the teachers will focus on real-world conversations more.

logo

Memrise made me see why people prefer having actual teachers rather than using online resources. There is a massive difference between human-to-human learning models and learning from a bot, the former being much more immersive.

Granted that the lessons were recorded lectures but even with that, the difference in my own learning was quite notable. Perhaps that is the medium I am most familiar with and subconsciously prefer. I know that is true for a lot of people.

I built my vocabulary quite a bit and got to know the meaning, context, and even sometimes history behind certain local phrases. However, I will say, after the lessons, whatever I had learned was mostly to hold a conversation in Dutch, it never got into the structural depth of the language.

AmazingTalker

If you’re looking for a more personalized experience where you have instructors not pre-recorded, rather present with you to guide you through your Dutch learning journey, consider Amazing Talker.

AmazingTalker

AmazingTalker

Amazing Talker is one of the few online resources that allows for 1-on-1 lessons with tutors who are more often than not natives of the language they teach. Would I call them experts in the field? Not particularly, but they are still very good at what they do.

Like any 1-on-1 learning experience, Amazing Talker is one of the more expensive options out of the bunch but in many ways it is worth the price. Your instructors will customize the lessons, the learning schedules are flexible, and you are connected to the teacher via a matching algorithm.

This has been a great opportunity for the locals to find jobs internationally as well, establishing a contact between them and the people who need their skills.

Features

  • Personalized Learning: There are no cookie-cutter lessons with this online platform.. AmazingTalker creates personalized courses and lesson plans just for you, based on your level, interests, and learning goals so that you can focus on exactly what you want out of the lessons.

  • Flexible Scheduling: AmazingTalker lets you choose when and how you learn. You can pick between private 1-on-1 sessions or small group classes, and schedule lessons at times that work best for you.

  • AI-Powered Matching: The smart AI matches you with tutors who fit your background, language level, and learning style, so you can hit the ground running.

  • Native Speaker Tutors: Most tutors on AmazingTalker are native speakers, which means you’ll not only learn the language, but also pick up authentic pronunciation, natural expressions, and cultural insights you won’t find in a textbook.

  • Diverse Language and Subject Offerings: Amazing Talker offers a wide range of languages from English and Spanish to French to Dutch (of course) and many more, along with other useful subjects.

  • 1-on-1 Attention: With one-on-one lessons, you get your tutor’s full attention. That means more opportunities to practice speaking, ask questions, and get personalized feedback, helping you progress on a pace you are comfortable with and more confidently. Move forward in your lesson plan when you are ready.

Price

The lessons can range anywhere from $10-$30 an hour depending on your tutor, language, preferences, saturation, and other factors. The Tutors you match with have different pricing and you will be matched with on suited to your budget.

Pros

  • One-on-one instruction.

  • Lessons tailored to your needs.

  • Native speaker exposure.

logo

Cons

  • Amazing Talker can be costly over time.

  • The quality of the learning may vary based on the tutor you have.

logo

From my personal experience, Amazing Talker is something I recommend to everyone even remotely interested in different cultures of the world. The tutors are phenomenal people, they can hold a decent conversation and besides learning the language you get to talk to a person from that part of the world.

You get to see their perspectives, beliefs, and cultures up close. As a learning platform it was simple enough to navigate and I could pace myself however I was comfortable. I found the concept refreshing because often times there are recorded videos or an AI doing the teaching, this time I got my lessons from an actual person, and a local at that.

Language International

Continuing with the theme of personalized learning, next on the list is Language International. This is by far the most expensive option out of all and for good reason. The platform will put you in direct contact with private tutors for Dutch lessons and you communicate with them via video chat.

Language International

Language International

The instructors are extremely qualified and trained to teach the language to anyone, whatever their level may be. They design custom lesson plans based on your schedule and strengths. They are better able to observe whatever the student lacks to fill in that gap.

They also track your progress and give you access to educational resources that other sites and apps will probably never give you access to. It is like attending a private school but from the comfort of your home.

Features

  • Global Language Course Marketplace: You can explore and compare thousands of language courses around the world in over 40 countries. Whether you want to study in a big city or a small town, there’s likely an option that fits your style.

  • Wide Language Selection: The platform offers courses in more than 20 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, and many more so there’s something for every learner.

  • School Reviews & Ratings: Before you book, you can read real reviews and ratings from students who’ve already taken courses at the schools. It’s a great way to get an honest look at what to expect.

  • Flexible Course Options: There’s a wide variety of courses to choose from: general language classes, business-focused courses, test prep (TOEFL, IELTS, etc.), academic programs, and more so you can tailor your learning to your personal goals.

  • Accommodation Booking: When booking your course, you can also arrange accommodation through the site. Options include staying with a local family, in a student residence, or in a private apartment so you’ll be comfortable during your studies.

  • Secure Online Booking & Support: Booking your language course is simple and secure. The platform offers safe payment options and personalized customer support to help with any questions. From choosing a course to settling in once you arrive.

Price

Average price is $40/hour but you are getting a personal instructor who will model their entire course and lesson plans according to your wants and needs. Anything personalized is bound to be expensive

Pros

  • Tailored learning experience

  • Structured lesson plans

logo

Cons

  • Expensive

  • Platform can be hard to navigate

  • It is by far the priciest

logo

The concept itself is similar to Amazing Talker but I have noted that there is difference in the quality of learning. The teachers clearly know what they are doing as they are experts in their field and I did not have to worry about compromising on quality of education.

To be fair, Amazing Talker can charge upto $30 an hour and Lanugage International I had to pay $40 per hour. That extra $10 for guaranteed quality education? Worth it. The only thing I found slightly annoying was the cluttered user interface. It can be overwhelming for new users, it certainly was for me.

The Best Language Learning Helper: AnyDoc Translator

While most of these apps are a great supplement to your language learning journey, they aren’t built for translation. If you’re serious about learning a language, chances are an app isn’t the only tool you’re using.

AnyDoc Translator

AnyDoc Translator

Let’s say you want to work with Dutch source materials, maybe to practice or to challenge yourself by reading some authentic text and seeing how well you understand it. But you can’t always tell right away if your translation is correct, and manually cross-checking it with a translation guide can be incredibly time-consuming.

That’s where AnyDoc Translator comes in. Not only is it completely free, but it also supports over 30 file types for translation. You can use it with websites, PDFs, Word documents, you name it. There are no ads, and no sign-up is required.

The tool preserved the original formatting, which made my self-study sessions even easier. It’s a great way to test yourself outside of your regular learning apps. This is a must-have for anyone looking for high-quality translations to complement their language learning.
